Kathleen M. Martinez is senior director of national strategic relationships and initiatives for BP America. Martinez is based at the company’s headquarters in Houston.
Martinez plays a central role in the advancement of BP America’s national external affairs efforts. Her responsibilities include leading key strategic relationships and oversight of the company’s U.S. commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, and veterans outreach efforts.
Martinez joined BP America in 2012 as manager of Houston community affairs. Martinez’s background includes more than 20 years of experience in public relations, corporate social responsibility, marketing and philanthropy, where she has demonstrated continued success in leadership, strategy development, community engagement and program execution.
Prior to joining BP, Martinez held a variety of leadership roles, including vice president of charitable giving for BBVA Compass, vice president of community affairs for the Wachovia-Wells Fargo Foundation, national multicultural marketing manager for Southwest Airlines, and press secretary to former U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes in Washington, D.C.
Martinez holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Texas, San Antonio, and is a certified corporate citizenship professional from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College.
Martinez is a member of the board of directors for the Houston Independent School District Foundation, serves as BP’s representative on the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Senior Executive Corporate Advisory Board, and trustee liaison for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. She is on the national Million Women Mentors Leadership Council, and the Texas Science and Engineering Fair Advisory Board. Martinez was named the 2014 Corporate Advocate of the Year by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and recently invited to be a fellow of the American Leadership Forum’s Class XLI.
Active in the community, Martinez volunteers at her son’s school in addition to helping community partners with strategic fundraising efforts and leveraging opportunities. Kathleen is involved with many organizations including Teach for America, Communities in Schools, St. Thomas High School, Cristo Rey Jesuit, The Houston Food Bank, the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the National Urban League, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the National Council of La Raza. Past board affiliations include YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas and the state advisory board for Advancement via Individual Determination.
The youngest of 14 children, Martinez is a first-generation high school and college graduate. She resides in Houston with her husband Jon and their son Kameron.
