Principal, Public & Political Leadership, Wellstone
A very proud ACMS alumna, and a former candidate for the Arizona legislature, Mónica comes to us from her role as Principal and Owner of Ocotillo Group, where she worked with elected officials, nonprofit leaders, teachers’ unions, and PACs. She was previously the Electoral Campaign Manager for Democracy for America, with a deep history in training and facilitation, communications, government affairs, Latino community organizing and voter engagement with both SEIU and Planned Parenthood.
Mónica’s passion for public service surfaced at age 19 when she took an internship at her local congressman’s office helping to work through a years-long backlog of citizenship applications. That backlog included her own parents’ application and years later, she was able to see these beginnings come full circle as her parents voted for the very first time, with their daughter on the ballot as a legislative candidate.
Mónica couldn’t be more excited to join Wellstone Action as a Principal in Public and Political Leadership, and help build a pipeline of diverse leaders across the country, stating, “I pride myself on teaching from experience when looking for and recruiting women, younger individuals and people of color to run for public office. Being able to tell someone you know exactly what they are about to embark on, what to expect every step of the way and even how to learn from a loss, gives me a unique perspective in identifying a strong pipeline of leaders”.
When Mónica isn’t traveling across the country training and identifying a new generation of public and political leaders, you can find her admiring the abundance of cacti and enchanting desert surroundings in her native Arizona, or baking desserts for a future second career.
